Pinched Nerve in Shoulder

A pinched nerve in the shoulder can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand.

A pinched nerve in the shoulder occurs when a nerve becomes compressed or irritated by surrounding tissues such as muscles, tendons, bones, or joints. This compression can interfere with normal nerve function and may cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand. While the symptoms are often felt in the shoulder, the actual source of the problem may sometimes originate in the neck or upper spine.

Common causes of a pinched nerve include poor posture, repetitive movements, muscle tension, herniated discs, arthritis, and age-related changes in the spine. Individuals who spend long hours working at a desk, frequently use computers, or perform repetitive overhead activities may be at greater risk of developing nerve-related shoulder pain.

Symptoms can vary depending on the affected nerve. Some people experience a sharp or burning pain in the shoulder, while others notice tingling sensations, numbness, or weakness that extends down the arm. Symptoms may worsen during certain movements, while sleeping, or after prolonged periods in the same position.

Diagnosis often involves a physical examination, review of symptoms, and sometimes imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI scans, or nerve studies. Treatment may include rest, posture correction, physical therapy, stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory medications, and activity modifications. In more severe cases, additional medical interventions may be required.

Most cases improve with conservative treatment, especially when the underlying cause is identified early. Persistent pain, increasing weakness, or significant numbness should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to prevent long-term nerve damage and restore normal shoulder function.
